About the Institute

The Mwai Kibaki Institute was founded in 2014 to carry on the work of Kenya's third President, H.E. Mwai Kibaki, and to keep alive the issues that were closest to him.

Those issues were never abstract. Progressive politics and leadership. Economic development. Thriving commerce and enterprise. Job creation and rising household incomes. The steady movement of a society toward a more advanced stage across its social, political and economic life.

The Institute was conceived along the lines of the American presidential centres and libraries — part think tank, part archive, part convening ground. It was intended to become Kenya's second presidential centre, and it holds a mandate to preserve and publish the record of President Kibaki's service: his essays, his memoirs, rare photographs, and the documents that trace his journey from Othaya in Nyeri County to State House.

Beyond the archive, the Institute conducts research and develops local solutions in the areas President Kibaki championed — agriculture, energy, water, education, and the revitalisation of coffee farming — and serves as a repository for research on governance, development policy and nation-building.
